The Africa Screen

August 2024

Developed as part of a capstone project at the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) programme in 2024, The African Screen explores how fashion and film can preserve and reintroduce African history to new generations. Working alongside Ruvarashe Mandima, I helped develop the concept for films celebrating untold stories from Zimbabwe and across the continent, with a particular focus on the women whose contributions to the liberation struggle have often been overlooked.

These costume concepts imagine how historical narratives can be translated into contemporary visual storytelling, celebrating resilience, leadership, and the many roles women played in shaping history.

"Mai Rhodesia"

Inspired by the women who sustained their communities during the liberation struggle, this design honors mothers and village leaders who raised families, built homes, cultivated the land, and preserved cultural traditions while many men were away. It celebrates quiet strength and unwavering resilience.

"Vakuru VeNdege"

This concept pays tribute to the women who served as pilots during the liberation struggle. Designed to embody courage, determination, and leadership, it challenges the assumption that combat and aviation were exclusively male spaces.

"Comrade Chisikana"

Representing the countless women who served as soldiers, commanders, and active participants in the liberation movement, this costume symbolizes unity, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of those whose stories deserve greater recognition.

"VekwaMbuya Nehanda"

Inspired by the young girls who acted as information carriers and supported their communities by gathering food and supplies, this design represents resourcefulness, bravery, and the often-unseen contributions of youth during times of conflict.
